Issue

How to mount a shared folder in virtualbox guest

Environment

Host = Windows 7; shared folder name = TEST

Guest = Red Hat / Oracle Enterprise Linux

Virtualbox Release 4.1.x

Resolution

Step 1 – Install Guest Additions (download from virtualbox website and install in linux)

Step 2- On linux terminal issue following commands

mount -t vboxsf TEST /mnt

where TEST is the shared folder you have defined in host OS

/mnt is the mount point in guest OS

Step 3 – the shared folder will now be visible under /mnt directory in guest OS

Issue

How to increase disk size in Virtual Box? For example, if you preset your disk size to 80GB and its nearly full, and you now want to increase it to 150GB.

Solution

From VirtualBox version 4.x onwards you can do it by using VBoxManage utility

Steps

1. Go to command prompt

2. Find the location of VBoxManage utility

3. Find the location of your Virtual Disk Image (.vdi) file

4. Issue following at the command (CMD) window

C:\”Program Files”\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage modifyhd FusionIDM.vdi –resize 512000

Assumptions

Its assumed that C:\”Program Files”\Oracle\VirtualBox is the path of VBoxManage utility

Output

Output from above command

C:\Users\KK\VirtualBox VMs\FusionIDM> C:\”Program Files”\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxMa
nage modifyhd FusionIDM.vdi –resize 512000

0%…10%…20%…30%…40%…50%…60%…70%…80%…90%…100%

Check to see if changes took effect

Now open your VirtualBox -> Settings -> Storage and see the size has gone up

Complete steps taken with error

[root@FusionIDM VBOXADDITIONS_4.1.8_75467]# ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
Verifying archive integrity… All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.1.8 Guest Additions for Linux………
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 4.1.8 of VirtualBox Guest Additions…
Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules           [  OK  ]
Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules       [  OK  ]
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules
Building the main Guest Additions module                   [  OK  ]
Building the shared folder support module                  [  OK  ]
Building the OpenGL support module                         [FAILED]
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong)
Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions              [  OK  ]
Installing the Window System drivers
Installing X.Org 7.1 modules                               [  OK  ]
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions    [  OK  ]
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart
the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services componen[  OK  ]

Resolution

Simply issue this command on command prompt before installing the Guest Additions

export MAKE=’/usr/bin/gmake -i’

Installation after above Resolution fixes ‘Building OpenGL Support module’ error

[root@FusionIDM VBOXADDITIONS_4.1.8_75467]# export MAKE=’/usr/bin/gmake -i’
[root@FusionIDM VBOXADDITIONS_4.1.8_75467]# ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
Verifying archive integrity… All good.

You should restart your guest to make sure the new modules are actually used

Installing the Window System drivers
